Career Building
A Unique and Challenging Experience
The Summer Research Experience at MSU CVM is called the Vet Med Research Scholars (VMRS) program. The VMRS program is a 12-week investigative program designed to provide veterinary students with training in biomedical research. Our program has generous support from both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Boehringer-Ingelheim. It provides skills that not only encourages pursuit of research careers but helps students develop into leaders within their veterinary profession.
Getting Started
Your journey begins here. Spend your summer building a career!
Don't Wait
Apply Today
We welcome students from any college of veterinary medicine in the United States to apply to our program. No prior experience in research in required.
Students must be enrolled and have successfully completed the first year of veterinary school in good academic standing. They cannot have completed the veterinary degree at the time of participation in the program. Mississippi State University and MSU CVM are committed to diversity in the educational process and seek to involve students from under-represented population groups in this program.
Hands-On Learning
Incorporate Research Into Your Education
To achieve the program goals, students receive training through two major components. The first is a hands-on research experience with a faculty mentor that continues throughout the 12-week program.
- Integration into a laboratory team with a mentor in a research area aligned with your interests throughout the summer
- Participation in a series of interactive educational experiences that are integrated into the program and culminate in presenting your research at Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Symposium
Mentoring Success
Excellence Through Collaboration
The key to success of the Summer Research Experience Program is the close collaboration of outstanding students with dedicated, competent scientists.
Funding support for the program is provided primarily through the Boehringer-Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program and NIH. Our NIH T35 award is jointly administered with Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine.
The Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Research Award for Graduate Veterinarians was awarded to 2020 MSU CVM grad and Summer Research Experience participant, Brittany Szafran. Watch a video about her research and experience in research at MSU CVM below.
