The Animal Health Center (AHC) is open to the public and serves as an extension of the primary care veterinarian, providing emergency and specialty referral care for companion animals, as well as emergency, primary and specialty referral care for horses and livestock in the region.
The AHC is accredited by the American Animal Hospital
Association (AAHA). AAHA is the only organization that accredits veterinary practices in the United States and Canada. Practices that accept the challenge of accreditation are evaluated on stringent quality standards that encompass all aspects of veterinary medicine and are continuously updated to keep accredited practice teams at the forefront of the profession. The AHC last received full accreditation in April 2023.
Only 12%–15% of veterinary practices in the US and Canada hold the “AAHA-accredited” designation.

Patients not being seen by our community veterinary services, equine service or food animal service must be referred to us by a practicing veterinarian. Referral assures the communication of test results, diagnoses and treatments between our team and your veterinarian, which is an important aspect of ensuring appropriate convalescent care for your animal at home.
The AHC is the clinical service unit of the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. It is where our veterinary students gain the bulk of their clinical experience, and it offers postgraduates opportunity for expanded study as they complete internships or residencies.
As a teaching hospital, the AHC has numerous advantages, including providing our students premier learning opportunities, while our clients and patients gain access to an entire team of veterinary providers. Student involvement allows for extra time and attention to the animals as well as the time to keep clients regularly informed and up-to-date of their pets’ care and treatment.
Our goal is to provide the most comprehensive and advanced care possible, so we also work closely with referring veterinarians. Keeping them updated on the progress of the patients they have referred provides continuity for the clients and helps ensure that treatment plans are well understood and followed.
